Bollywood Actor Ahuja Out on Bail Following Rape Conviction, Sentencing

NEW DELHI -- Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja, 38, was granted bail by the Bombay High Court Wednesday in an ongoing case where he was given a seven-year jail term last month for raping his maid. The actor was asked to post a bail amount of 50,000 rupees ($1,100).

The court also restricted Ahuja's travel outside India without permission and the actor will have to present himself to investigating agencies whenever required.

In his appeal, Ahuja had claimed that he had been falsely implicated in the case after he was first arrested in June 2009, following allegations by his maid that he raped her in his Mumbai home. Ahuja was first granted bail in October 2009 on the condition that he stay away from Mumbai until the case came to trial. Ahuja returned to his family home in Delhi with his wife and daughter.

Still on the rise, Ahuja made his film debut with 2004's?acclaimed arthouse release Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi?(A?Thousand Desires) followed by mainstream outings like 2006's Gangster. Among his upcoming projects is horror?film The Accident?produced by Mumbai-based banner?Pritish Nandy Communications and U.K.-based High Point?Media.
