I had installed IE9.
Went through the updating, reinstalling routines to no avail. The scripting issue arose only when viewing WW1 records.
Additionally, there have been display and operating problems with some sidebar gadgets so it is not just a problem with FTM.
Uninstalled IE9 and all problems have disappeared.
Chrome now default browser!
