'Titanic' 3D bow set for April 6, 2012

Paramount, 20th Century Fox and James Cameron have set April 6, 2012 as the date for the worldwide re-release of "Titanic" in 3D.That frame is significant in that April 10, 2012 marks the centennial of the date the real Titanic first set sail.Written, produced and helmed by Cameron, "Titanic" bowed in December of 1997 and went on to gross more than $1 billion worldwide and receive 11 Academy Awards, including best picture and director.Converting "Titanic" to 3D has been a goal of Cameron for quite some time. In February, at the preem of the cave-diving drama "Sanctum," which Cameron produced, he told Variety he was working on the conversion and that it was on target to be released sometime in 2012.The conversion work on "Titanic" is being overseen by Cameron and his Lightstorm producing partner Jon Landau, who produced the film."There's a whole generation that's never seen 'Titanic' as it was meant to be seen, on the bigscreen," said Cameron in a release announcing the 3D release date. "And this will be 'Titanic' as you've never seen it before, digitally remastered at 4K and painstakingly converted to 3D." For 20th Century Fox, the re-release marks the latest collaboration with Cameron following "Avatar." "Our 30-plus year relationship with Jim Cameron and Lightstorm has been enormously rewarding, from 'Aliens' to 'Avatar', and the global phenomenon of 'Titanic' remains one of the greatest sources of pride in our history," said Fox Filmed Entertainment chairmen and CEOs, Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman. The 3D bow of "Titanic" will also help commemorate a milestone for Paramount."This new presentation of Paramount's top-grossing film is particularly special because 2012 is the 100th anniversary of our studio," said Brad Grey, chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures. "Paramount has had the pleasure of introducing audiences to some of the all-time classics of cinema during that century of moviemaking and we cannot think of a better way to mark the occasion than with this re-release of 'Titanic.'?"
