Emission production as you state it is only a problem on a local level where the emissions are most concentrated (dense cities). Even electric cars will have emissions (either in production or at whatever plant is making the electricity for it). It's the part about digging up materials which have been locked underground for millions of years and then releasing those emissions into the atmosphere that is the global problem. If all of the energy and consumables your vehicle used during it's entire lifetime (including manufacture) were harvested from plants or otherwise scraped off of the surface of the biosphere instead of from within the ground you would essentially be close to net-neutral impact on the planet as far as emissions are concerned (not that there is no impact, it would just be ridiculously low impact).

Biodiesel (as usable in my VW Jetta) is only a little less efficient than petrol / oil based diesel. Mileage is about 5mpg lower or so, but you have to make sure the biodiesel is clean of other contaminants which can be a bit laborious depending on the original source. Of course most people I am aware of will typically use an 85/15 blend for better performance (15% regular diesel).

As far as emissions go, I don't think it's too much different but I don't know much about that. I guess it would entirely depend on how "clean" and viable the input is.

In any case, if we can turn something which truly does not have a better use other than to be cleaned (at great expense) and sent back into the biome into a usable fuel at less expense I fully support research into it. It seems to be much smarter than ethanol where suddenly the price of fuel becomes linked to the price of food. We honestly don't currently have a better use for human sewage anyways considering it is not considered fit for fertilizer either. Besides, if this comes to America just think of how much fatty acids are already present in the McSewage, or how we could just re-introduce Olean oil if we needed to increase production (how's that for a disgusting thought?).

Medical exemptions from school vaccination requirements across states explored

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? In states where medical exemptions from vaccination requirements for kindergarten students are easier to get, exemption rates are higher, potentially compromising herd immunity and posing a threat to children and others who truly should not be immunized because of underlying conditions, according to a study published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases and now available online.

Nationwide in scope, the study found inconsistency among states in standards allowing medical exemptions from school immunization requirements. The investigators concluded that medical exemptions should be monitored and continuously evaluated to ensure they are used appropriately.

In their study, Stephanie Stadlin, MPH, Robert A. Bednarczyk, PhD, and Saad B. Omer, MBBS, MPH, PhD, from the Hubert Department of Global Health at Emory University Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta, evaluated state medical exemptions from kindergarten entry requirements over seven school years (from 2004-'05 to 2010-'11), which totaled 87,631 medical exemptions nationwide over the period studied. The researchers found that, compared to states with more stringent criteria for getting medical exemptions, states with easier requirements saw a significant increase in these exemptions. Their findings suggest that requiring more accountability of both parents and physicians for granting medical exemptions can be helpful in ensuring that these exemptions are valid and not used as an alternative to non-medical exemptions because they are easier to obtain.

"The appropriate use of medical exemptions is important to maintaining sufficient herd immunity to protect those who should not be vaccinated due to medical contra-indications," said Dr. Omer, the senior investigator of the study. "Medical providers, parents, school officials, and state health officials are responsible for ensuring that medical exemptions are actually medically indicated."

In an accompanying editorial, Daniel A Salmon, PhD, MPH, and Neal Halsey, MD, of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, noted that "children with valid medical exemptions need to be protected from exposure to vaccine preventable diseases by insuring high coverage rates among the rest of the population. Granting medical exemptions for invalid medical contraindications may promote unfounded vaccine safety concerns." The researchers' findings, they added, should be useful to those responsible for implementing and enforcing school immunization requirements at the state and local levels.

Australia says six rescued, more than 140 missing from asylum boat

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Rescuers have pulled six people from the sea off Indonesia but authorities have grave fears for more than 140 more after a suspected refugee boat disappeared on its way to Australia, Australia's Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said on Thursday.

Indonesian authorities are coordinating the search for the boat, which first reported to be in distress on Wednesday in Indonesia's Sunda Strait, with several merchant ships and rescue helicopters at the scene, around 42 nautical miles off Java.

"Six people have been plucked from the sea. We have grave fears for a lot more," Clare told reporters in Sydney, adding authorities believed the boat was carrying 150 people.

"Six people have survived. Potentially dozens and dozens haven't."

Refugees seeking asylum in Australia often set sail from Indonesia heading for Australia's Indian Ocean territory of Christmas Island in dangerous and overcrowded boats, with the help of people smugglers.

Since 2001, almost 1,000 people have died at sea while attempting to reach Australia on overcrowded and often unseaworthy refugee boats from Indonesia.

A person on board the unidentified boat had contacted Australian rescue authorities by telephone on Wednesday, saying the vessel had engine trouble and needed assistance.

A search by Indonesian authorities failed to locate the boat on Wednesday, but a merchant vessel early on Thursday reported it had seen people in the water and was attempting to recover survivors, Australia's Maritime Safety Authority said.

Refugee policy and border protection are hot-button issues in Australia, despite the fact the country only receives a small number of the world's asylum seekers each year.

The U.N. refugee agency said Australia received 11,800 claims for asylum in 2011, compared with 441,000 claims globally, with 327,000 of those claims in Europe.

Australia is working on plans to reopen refugee detention centers in the Pacific islands nations of Nauru and Papua New Guinea to deter refugee boats from reaching Australia and prevent sinkings.

Maldives braced for 'coup' verdict

A report into the alleged coup that ousted the president of the Maldives in February was due to be released on Thursday, with supporters of the former leader threatening more protests in the capital Male.

Mohamed Nasheed, who says he was forced out by the military, has refused to recognise the new government, and frequent clashes have erupted in recent months between police and political activists in the Indian Ocean atoll nation.

Nasheed's Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) said it would hold a mass rally in Male to coincide with the release of the official report into how their leader was toppled from power.

The MDP has banked on the investigation supporting its claim that Nasheed was the victim of a coup, but Maldivian officials said the report was likely to say he had instead stepped down due to a police mutiny and civil unrest.

The Paris-based International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) said it was "extremely concerned" about the risk of violence when the Commission of National Inquiry (CoNI) report is made public on Thursday.

The five-member CoNI was asked to establish the facts behind Nasheed's fall and his claim that he was ejected by the military.

MDP's nominee in the CoNI, Ahmed Saeed, resigned Wednesday night from the Commonwealth-initiated panel saying the investigation was incomplete and it had ignored key evidence.

Since February's upheaval, which badly affected the islands' key tourism sector, scores of protesters have been detained at demonstrations before being later released.

MDP spokesman Hamid Abdul Ghafoor told AFP by telephone on Wednesday that police were intimidating its supporters and trying to block them from travelling from other islands to Male for the planned demonstration.

President Mohamed Waheed, who took over from Nasheed and was formerly his deputy, said he would back the report's conclusions.

"CoNI's independence, impartiality, and credibility has now been very well established," he said in a statement.

Waheed has rejected international calls for early elections saying it was not practical to hold a fresh vote before July 2013.

A hearing that will give Apple the stage to argue if Samsung should be banned from selling some of its Android smartphones in the U.S. has been pushed back until December.

Judge Lucy Koh, who has been presiding over the Apple vs. Samsung patent infringement case, has moved the hearing from Sept. 20 to Dec. 6.

The news comes less than a week after a jury awarded Apple more than $1 billion in damages for patent infringements, with a looming possibility that several Samsung devices might be banned from the U.S.

Although Samsung was found guilty of infringement related to 28 devices, many of which are no longer sold in the U.S., Apple said in a filing that it "has tailored this list to address a portion of the immediate, ongoing, irreparable harm that Apple is suffering."

The tailored list names eight devices: the Galaxy S 4G, AT&T Galaxy S2, Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, Galaxy S2 T-Mobile, Galaxy S2 Epic 4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge and Galaxy Prevail.

Samsung has since issued a statement saying that the ruling will "lead to fewer choices, less innovation and potentially higher prices" and will be "a loss for the American consumer."

If your wallet won't stretch to those prices, lower-spec wired versions are available for $200 and $100, respectively.

For those of us who've found our sets die at the cable connections, the company's smartly built all of theirs to be braided, detachable and each one has an in-line hands-free kit as standard. Ray Bradbury spent his life writing science fiction and questioning the motives of government; therefore it should come as no surprise that, in the 1960s, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) spent time investigating Bradbury in regards to his political leanings.

According to FBI files obtained by the?Huffington Post?through the use of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), the famed and now deceased writer was reported to the FBI by screenwriter Martin Berkeley. Martin admitted to the House oUn-American Activities Committee several years earlier that he was a Communist. Martin would go on to name 155 people he believed to also be involved with the Communist party.

During his testimony, Martin Berkeley specifically said science fiction writers were likely to be Communists because of the ideas they shared.

In speaking out against Ray Bradbury, the screenwriter claimed his work was ?definitely slanted against the United States and its capitalistic form of government.?

In one of the more shocking statements of his claims, Martin said Ray Bradbury was using his novels to scare people and, by doing so, making it ?very possible to conduct a Third World War ? which the American people would seriously believe could not be won since their morale had been seriously destroyed.?

Ray Bradbury at the time did not back down from Martin Berkeley?s claims, going so far as to take out a full-page ad against the House Un-American Activities Committee in which he calls the groups probes ?claptrap and nonsense.?

Ironically, by investigating Ray Bradbury without a valid cause, the FBI fed right into the very issues the author wrote about.

For most people there are likely a handful of nuggets of advice or wisdom they have picked up along the way that have stuck with them for one reason or another.

For me, one of those, was the observation someone I respect greatly once made that ?the Difference Between Trauma and Education is Support?.? It was said in reference to the Manager-Employee relationship in the workplace but it also has clear implications for the parent-child dynamic.

In thinking about its implications, I think what is meant by the statement is that when sending someone (either as a manager or a parent) into new territory, the outcome for the individual (trauma or education) is dependent on whether or not support is offered.? Having this knowledge, therefore, has deep and far reaching implications in the chaos we do or do not leave behind as parents and managers.

As parents, we all want to avoid traumatizing our kids.? As a manager, we (hopefully) want the same for the people that work for us (and ultimately, it is in our best interest in terms of employee productivity to do so). ?So what is the meant by the difference between ?trauma? and ?education??? And what does ?support? look like?

Degree of Success in Transmitting Support is the Outcome Determinant

I think the different outcomes come into sharp focus with an example.? Say your child is starting a new school.? The observation would dictate that the outcome for the child?education or trauma?will turn entirely on our degree of success at communicating the presence of support to the child in getting thru the new experience.? Importantly, for us as parents and/or managers, experiential outcomes?trauma or education?occur regardless of our level of involvement/awareness in the child?s/employees experience.

Awareness Leads to Support

All parents and managers want to avoid traumatic experiences for our children and/or employees.? Knowing that the determinant of the outcome of new experiences is the presence of support means we can take steps to ensure the outcome of new experiences are positive rather than traumatic.

I can remember back in the late-1980s when driving a Hyundai was the epitome of un-cool. Well, things have certainly changed since then. Now, Hyundai?s are known for their style, quality, and affordability ? and even for being, dare I say it, ?cool.?

This is a development not lost on U.S. auto giants Ford (NYSE:F) and General Motors (NYSE:GM), or on the Japanese automakers Honda (NYSE:HMC) and Toyota (NYSE:TM). Even German behemoth Volkswagen AG (PINK:VLKAY) is likely watching Hyundai?s remarkable progress, and well it should.

Through the first half of 2012, Hyundai Group?s U.S. market share ? which includes Kia-brand vehicles ? held steady vs. the prior year?s six months. The company captured 8.87% of the market midway through 2012, down slightly from the 8.97% it garnered through the first six months of 2011. By comparison, the much larger Ford and GM saw their respective market share fall in the first half of the year, with Ford?s share sliding 1.21% to 15.68%, and GM?s share declining 1.83% to 18.09%. Hyundai also bested rival Nissan (PINK:NSANY) in market share, as well as Volkswagen.

Earlier this year, John Krafcik, chief executive officer of Hyundai Motor America, announced that the company aims to increase its U.S. sales to 700,000 cars and sport-utility vehicles this year, which is a roughly 8% increase over the prior year. The only thing holding Hyundai back is the fact that its production facilities at the time were already running near full capacity. And while the company is reportedly contemplating adding more production facilities, a decline in demand from buyers in Europe has allowed Hyundai to ship some inventory originally intended for Europe back to the U.S.

To be certain, things haven?t been all roses for Hyundai, especially recently. The company?s exports stalled in July, down some 23% because of a labor dispute that has crippled production. According to the company, the total number of Hyundai and Kia vehicles made in July sank to 120,493, a big drop from the 156,200 units made in the previous month.

Here?s the money quote from the Hyundai statement as reported by the Wall Street Journal: ?U.S. dealerships for Hyundai and Kia had some difficulty meeting soaring demand due to a shortage of vehicles.? Moreover, the company said it had less than a month of inventory remaining as of Aug. 1. That?s well below the optimal inventory levels of 60 days.

The supply constraints caused by the strike in South Korean production facilities will likely take its toll on Hyundai and Kia sales, but whatever sales disruption takes place, it will likely be a mere bump in the road for the company. Once Hyundai settles the disputes and gets back on track with full production, the race with U.S., Japanese and German automakers will resume.

The long-term implications of Hyundai?s drive into the lead pack of top-selling automakers in the U.S. sales means an increasingly competitive marketplace for the likes of Ford and GM. It also means that to stay competitive, these companies likely will have to offer more discounts on more models, which will take an increasing bite out of profit margins.

To combat the loss of U.S. market share, Ford and particularly GM will have to search for market share outside the states. The only problem is that Europe is mired in recession, and the other big market, China, is having its own struggles with economic growth.

To be certain, the U.S. auto market is where it?s at for car makers, and any company making gains here at home is liable to cause an uncomfortable stir for those currently in the top spot. So, if you?re an investor in U.S. auto stocks, you better keep your eyes on the rearview mirror ? because Hyundai is catching up.

FCC interested in taxing broadband Internet - Neowin

The Federal Communications Commission is considering a proposal to tax broadband Internet service, reports The Hill. The funds raised by the proposed tax would be used to expand access to high-speed Internet for the estimated 19 million Americans who do not have broadband.

This is not exactly fresh news, as the FCC issued a request for comments on the proposal in April of 2012. However, as The Hill notes, the proposed tax has gone largely unnoticed in the public perception, even though dozens of companies and trade associations have already voiced their opinions on the matter. Companies including AT&T, Sprint and Google have expressed support for the tax.

The tax would supplement the Connect America Fund, which is a subsidy of the FCC with the goal of expanding Internet access in America. A similar Universal Service Fund exists, which ensures that even those in the remotest areas of the country have access to telephone service. Consumers contribute to the Universal Service Fund via fees on landline and cellular phone bills.

In 2011, the FCC converted $4.5 billion of the Universal Service Fund to create the Connect America Fund. Because fewer and fewer people are using phone services, contributions to the Universal Service Fund, and as a result the Connect America Fund, are drying up. Julius Genachowski, chairman of the FCC, believes that expanding high-speed Internet access is the next great infrastructure challenge, so funds must be raised somehow.

The Hill points out that the proposed tax could run afoul of the Internet Tax Freedom Act, the 1998 law that bans the government from taxing Internet access. The FCC argues that this would not be a tax, but a "fee" that the providers choose to pass onto the consumers.

As for a timeline on the tax, it is believed that the FCC will probably not make any drastic, controversial moves ahead of the election in November.

Moving to a new area can be daunting. You can ease the anxiety if you do your home work and take a few precautions that might not be necessary if you were selling one house and buying another one in the same area.

First consider why you want to move to a new location. Empty nesters whose family lives elsewhere often want to move to be closer to children and grandchildren. Financial considerations often enter into the decision. The cost of living may be lower elsewhere than it is where you currently live.

Whatever the reason, you should consider your motivation carefully. What may seem like a good idea on the surface could look less desirable after you factor in the aspects of your current lifestyle that may not be able to be replicated elsewhere.

For example, you may have a large circle of friends and family in your current location that provides support you need. Or if you have serious medical issues, you may need to stay close to your medical providers.

Some people want to make big changes because they're dissatisfied with their life. Changing locations won't necessarily make a difference; you take your personal problems with you. Make sure your desire to get out of town is for the right reason.

Your employer may be driving the decision to move elsewhere, which means you may have no choice if you want to remain employed.

Find out what relocation benefits your company may offer. Some companies will cover the costs of your move and even buy you out of your existing home. Others provide attractive financing.

HOUSE HUNTING TIP: Find out as much as you can about the next location before you sell your home and move. Visit the new area several times, ideally during different times of year. Make sure the new location will provide you with what you need.

Make a list of all the services and amenities you want in the new location. Like buying a home, you may not find everything you want and need. But you should be able to satisfy your needs and a good portion of what you want in the new place. Otherwise, it may not be worth changing places.

Moving is expensive. You don't want to find out in a year or so that you made a mistake and wish you hadn't sold your old home and made the move. In today's volatile housing marketing, you could lose money if you sell the new home soon after buying it.

The Internet provides a wealth of information about communities around the country and homes for sale. Hook up with a good real estate agent in an area where you think you want to live and ask to be sent information about new listings that might suit your needs. Or sign up with an online listing notification service with a home listing website like Realtor.com.

Inventories of homes for sale in desirable locations are very low in some areas, which may complicate an easy move from one location to the next. A tight market can also mean that rentals are expensive and hard to find.

However, renting for a while in a new location is a good idea if you've never lived there. It gives you the opportunity to get to know neighborhoods in the new area and make a decision on where you want to live based on firsthand experience. Talk to homeowners in the area to find out what they like least about living there.

THE CLOSING: Check with your financial adviser to find out the monetary and tax consequences of relocating and if this is the right time to make the move.

Gambia executes nine prisoners by firing squad: government

BANJUL (Reuters) - Gambia said on Monday it had executed nine prisoners, prompting critics to call for sanctions on the president whose plans to clear the country's death row by mid-September had already drawn a flurry of international condemnation.

Six civilians and three members of the military were executed by firing squad on Sunday after their appeal processes had been exhausted, the interior ministry said in a statement.

It named the prisoners and said they had been found guilty of a variety of crimes, all involving murder. At least one of those named had been previously identified as a Senegalese citizen but there was no immediate comment from Dakar.

President Yahya Jammeh last week announced in a speech plans to push through all pending death sentences saying he wanted to "ensure that criminals get what they deserve".

The decision drew condemnation from the African Union, Britain and the European Union, which promised a quick but unspecified response.

Monday's interior ministry statement appeared to reject outside influence, saying Gambia had the right to implement its own laws, and suggested more executions would take place.

"All sentences as prescribed by law will be carried out to the letter including the death penalty," it added.

Gambia lures British sun-seeking tourists to its beach resorts but Jammeh has frequently been criticized for his rights record since he seized power in a 1994 coup.

Amnesty International said that the executions took place last week. An umbrella group calling itself Civil Society Associations Gambia (CSAG) said it believed they were only made public due to the international debate over the issue.

Following the confirmation of the executions, Ousainou Darboe, a leading opposition leader, and CSAG appealed for targeted international sanctions to be imposed on Jammeh.

"This is not the first time - this has been going on too long. The abuses in the country are outrageous but nobody seems to notice," CSAG chairman Banka Manneh told Reuters.

"We want targeted sanctions. Jammeh's (foreign) help must stop ... We are willing to fight this fight but we cannot do it without some help from the international community."
