From Texas - According to the Texas Department of State Health Services there have been over 400 confirmed cases of West Nile virus in Texas this summer, with 17 deaths.? Officials are urging residents to get rid of standing water near their homes and to use bug repellant when outdoors.

From LA - A report appearing online in Cancer Immunology, Immunotherapy describes how an experimental vaccine increased survival in patients with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumour. Compared with a median survival of 14.6 months in patients receiving the standard treatment of radiation and chemotherapy, those who also received the vaccine had a median survival of 38.4 months.

From Portugal - As more and more children are leading sedentary lives, it may be affecting their motor skills, according to a report in the American Journal of Human Biology. Researchers measured the physical activity of over 200 boys and girls aged 9-13 and also evaluated their motor coordination. The researchers found that the children who spent approximately three quarters of their time being sedentary, were many times less likely to have normal motor coordination than their more active peers

Hubble photo reveals colliding star clusters

A new photo from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope shows two star clusters that appear to be in the early stages of merging.

The colliding clusters are 170,000 light-years away in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small satellite galaxy of our own Milky Way. They're found in the core of a massive star-forming region called 30 Doradus, which is also known as the Tarantula Nebula.

Scientists originally thought the clump of stars was a single cluster, but the new Hubble images suggest there are two distinct groups that differ in age by about 1 million years, scientists said.

The 30 Doradus complex has been actively forming stars for about 25 million years. Researcher Elena Sabbi of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Md., and her team began looking at the area while searching for fast-moving "runaway stars," which have been booted from the clusters that gave birth to them. "Stars are supposed to form in clusters, but there are many young stars outside 30 Doradus that could not have formed where they are; they may have been ejected at very high velocity from 30 Doradus itself," Sabbi said in statement.

The giant gas clouds that condense to form star clusters can fragment into smaller pieces, according to some models. Once these smaller bits begin producing stars, they might then merge to become a bigger system. Sabbi and her team think this may be happening in 30 Doradus.

While perusing the Hubble data, the team noticed something odd about the supposed single cluster at the heart of 30 Doradus. Rather than being spherical as expected, it's elongated in places ? just like merging galaxies that get stretched by each other's gravitational pull.

There are also lots of high-speed runaway stars around 30 Doradus, researchers said. They may have been ejected after a process called core collapse, in which huge stars sink to the center of a cluster. This makes the core unstable, and the big stars begin booting each other out into space.

The big cluster in the center of 30 Doradus, known as R136, is too young to have experienced a core collapse, researchers said.

But the phenomenon can occur more quickly in small systems, so the runaway stars may have been produced after a smaller cluster merged into R136.

The researchers hope to tease out more of the details via follow-up observations with Hubble and other telescopes.

Further study of 30 Doradus could help scientists understand the details of cluster formation and how stars formed in the early universe, researchers said.

Reduce, reuse, recycle is hard to beat as a guideline for living more sustainably. What?s surprising is how many fabulous reuse materials can be snagged for free. A trip to the Leon County Solid Waste Facility east of town at 7550 Apalachee Parkway can furnish the do-it-yourselfer with basic materials to improve both yard and home. Mulches, ?new to you? paints, and varnishes are among the top treasures there.

For your yard, you can haul away as much coarse or fine mulch as needed at no charge. Your choice of mulch has implications for sustainability. The very best materials to mulch your garden and landscape are those that accumulate from your own yard (leaves, pine straw and so forth).

However, if you need a larger supply, consider a trip to County Solid Waste. The County?s mulch consists of ground yard debris collected from curbsides, including logs, limbs, and leaves. Use it to surround your garden and landscaped beds to stifle weed growth, conserve water and create pathways. The more areas you convert to beds with mulch, the less area you have to maintain with watering and other plant care?yep, another sustainability benefit. Borrow a friend?s truck or bring large containers and a shovel to scoop up your freebies. If you call ahead, County workers will help by loading your pickup once per day at no charge.

The County?s fine mulch is a more powdery substance that is simply the smaller particles that filter out from the grinding of the coarse mulch. While the fine mulch does not supply much nitrogen, it is high in the other two essential plant nutrients, potassium and phosphorous. Use it to incorporate into your garden beds as a soil amendment to improve the texture of the soil. This in turn helps hold water. The mulch has been tested by the County to ensure that it does not contain harmful levels of any toxic substances.

So, now that your yard is looking good, what about a fresh coat of paint outdoors or indoors? A visit to the County?s ?Swap Shop? can supply an adventurous handy man or woman with free paint. For big projects, large batches of leftover good quality paint are blended into unique batches of color in five-gallon containers. These are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis on Thursday mornings at 8 a.m.

In addition, the shelves of the Swap Shop are packed with still-useful items that have been turned in to the Hazardous Waste division. These include smaller cans of latex and oil paints and stains of a constantly changing array of hues. You can generally count on obtaining any needed polyurethane or spray paint for small jobs by showing up at the Swap Shop. You never know what you will find when perusing the shelves there?certainly there is enough to stimulate many a creative craft or refinishing project. When you make a trip, be sure to bring any of your own unneeded paints or chemicals that are gathering dust on your shelves, as well as old electronics to help others ?close the loop? of reuse.

So as you plan your next yard or home improvement project, don?t overlook the materials that await you for free. Reusing these will save you money and help you become an active agent in creatively reusing materials that have been generated in our community. The Hazardous Waste Collection Center and Swap Shop are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Self-loading of free mulch is also available those days. What if Google had never made Android: how would iOS 6 be different today, and who would be Apple's biggest competitor?

The title really does say it all -- if Google had never gone ahead with Android and, instead, if they'd maintained their close relationship with Apple, what would iOS 6 be like today? Would Google Maps still be there, and would it be as good as Google Maps on Android is, including turn-by-turn? Would YouTube still be there, and be as good as YouTube on Android? What other services might have been integrated, GTalk instead of iMessage? Google sync instead of iCloud? Would the iPhone 5 ship with NFC-powered Google Wallet? Would the iPad mini come with 20 GB of free space on Google Drive? How far and how deeply could the Apple and Google love affair have gone?

And who would have taken Android's place as Apple's biggest competitor? Would webOS have gotten on Verizon sooner and enjoyed all the marketing that went instead to Droid? Would BlackBerry have kept more of its user base and gained more of the not-Apple share? Would Samsung have gone all-in on Windows Phone and be neck-in-neck with Nokia for the top spot? Would Facebook or Amazon have already rushed in to fill the void?

Put your imaginations to work and give me your best guess -- where would our iPhones and iPads, and the rest of the mobile industry be today if Google had never left Apple?

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - President Obama's latest squad of campaign supporters is a slam dunk. Obama has enlisted a growing army of celebrity supporters from the film, television and music arenas this election season, so it was only a matter of time before he commanded sports stars to join his team.

Enter a lineup of basketball luminaries - Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Kyrie Irving, Carmelo Anthony and Sheryl Swoopes - who have thrown in to shoot hoops with a pair of lucky civilians at an upcoming "Obama Classic" event.

The price of entry to the sporty affair - date and other special guests TBA - is, like other celebrity-oriented events Obama's team has organized in recent months, a donation of $3 or more to the campaign.

The sweepstakes winner and guest will also have the chance to hobnob with Obama and Jordan "over dinner," according to a promotional email circulated Tuesday by campaign aide Marlon Marshall, who opened his message by saying he's "so jealous" of the lucky winner, "I can barely write the rest of this email."

But Marshall managed to collect himself enough to entice would-be donors: "Hit the court with Patrick Ewing and Melo?" Trade stories with the president? This is the kind of stuff your kids will tell their kids, and no one will believe it until you show them a photo," he wrote.

The president's strategists are pulling out all the stops in the final three months before the election, and their unabashed use of the celebrity angle stems in part, no doubt, from practical considerations. Stars are magnets for money and attention, and presumptive Republican candidate Mitt Romney is doing quite well on the fundraising front.

According to reports released Monday, Romney and his allies at the Republican National Committee raised more than $101 million in the month of July, while Obama and the Democratic National Committee pulled in $75 million.

Kangaroo condoms get a hop on London organisers

LONDON (Reuters) - London Olympic organisers are investigating how a bucket of Australian-tagged condoms found its way into the athletes' village without official consent.

Australian BMX cyclist Caroline Buchanan tweeted a photograph from the athletes' village of a container of condoms with a placard reading "Kangaroos condoms, for the gland downunder" with the picture of a boxing kangaroo.

She joked that the container seemed to back up rumours that the athletes' village becomes a hot bed of activity as thousands of competitors complete their events and celebrate after years of working to get to the Olympics.

"Haha, the rumours are true. Olympic village," tweeted Buchanan, whose BMX contest starts on Wednesday.

Barcelona started the trend of supplying free condoms to athletes when the Spanish city held the Olympics in 1992, with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) endorsing the move to help AIDS awareness and prevention. The handouts came with health information.

The London Olympic organisers, LOCOG, have provided 150,000 free condoms in dispensers for the 10,800 athletes at the Games. They are supplied by Durex, part of British consumer goods group Reckitt Benckiser, which paid for the supply rights.

A LOCOG spokeswoman said they were trying to find out who distributed the so-called Kangaroo condoms, with the container shown to hold condoms from Durex rivals Ansell Ltd, an Australian company and Pasante, a private British company.

She said athletes and officials were allowed to bring products into the village for their personal use.

"We will look into this and ask that they are not handed out to other athletes because Durex are our supplier," said the spokeswoman.

Organisers tightly control which brands can be promoted at the Games, striking sponsorship deals with a limited number of companies and trying to stop non-sponsors from getting free publicity on the back of the Olympics.

A spokeswoman for Ansell said her company knew nothing about the issue and it could well be a prank.

"We have had no official participation or association with the Olympics at all," she said.

Lawrence Boon, managing director of Pasante, said his company had no involvement with the distribution of condoms in the athletes' village and he suspected it was a prank by the Australian team.

"We have no association with the Olympics but we did launch a gold condom this year for champions," said Boon.

"With such high teenage pregnancy and STD rates, we try to make people carry condoms by making them fun and interesting."

A Durex spokeswoman said Durex was "proud to be supplying free condoms for the Olympics Games" but declined to elaborate further.

The number of condoms supplied at London tops the 100,000 made available to athletes in Beijing four years ago.

In Sydney in 2000, organisers took delight in having to order 20,000 more condoms after the initial allocation of 70,000 ran out.
